Box Score Charlotte, NC - The Lady Wildcats (16-8) (Ranked 7th in the USCAA Coaches Poll) took a 3-1 win over cross-town rival Johnson C. Smith University Tuesday night. JWU wanted to complete the season sweep, and extend their winning streak against the Lady Golden Bulls to six and they did just that.
The Lady Golden Bulls took an early 5-1 lead in game one. JWU was able to recover, cutting the gap to 1 at 9-8 behind strong serving from Madelyn Leonard. JCSU again built a comfortable lead at 16-11, before the Lady Wildcats would rally to tie the game at 22. JWU then closed with a 3-0 run to take the game, 25-23.
The Golden Bulls would start game two on top at 6-2. The Lady Wildcats tightened their defense and were able to tie the score at 6. JCSU went on a short run to re-take the lead, which they would hold for a large portion of the game. Solid defense from Leonard and Kylie Marquardt allowed JWU to close to within 2. Unfortunately, the Golden Bulls stayed on top, closing the game with a 6-2 run. Their 25-18 win evened the match at 1 game each.
Following a 5-5 start into the third game, JWU took control at the net, going on a 9-3 run behind serving from Leonard and Moriah Hughes . The Lady Wildcats were able to maintain the lead for the remainder of the game, and held off JCSU 25-22.
Game four was an extremely hard fought game for both the Lady Wildcats and the Golden Bulls. The score was tied on five different occasions at 11, 13, 14, 16, and 19. Tori Dublino led JWU on a 5-0 run, which included kills from Leonard and Jazmyne Williams. JCSU again rallied to tie the score one final time, but the Lady Wildcats score the final two points to win 26-24.
JWU completed their third consecutive season sweep over their I-77 neighbors. The Lady Wildcats are next in action this Saturday, October 11th when they play in the Wake Technical CC tri-match. JWU's first game is at 4:30pm against Lenoir CC and then again at 6pm vs. Wake Technical CC.
