Sabers Come From Behind to Nip Wildcats

Box Score

Charlotte, NC – The Wildcats (5-22) came into Wednesday night's contest against local USCAA foe Barber-Scotia College (9-18) looking to end a 9 game losing streak and sweep the season series with the Sabers. JWU dominated the action for much of the game but ran out of gas at the end and lost a game that was marred by 7 technical fouls.

BSC jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first 3 minutes of the game. The Wildcats then went on a 14-3 run to take a 5 point lead with 13 minutes left in the half. The run was keyed by two Jay Keller 3 pointers. JWU would extend the lead to 13 at 27-14 over the next four and a half minutes thanks in large part to 3 Michael Daniel free throws. The Wildcats were able to maintain a working margin for the rest of the half. They finished the half up 43-29 as Garth Baily grabbed an offensive rebound and scored just before the halftime buzzer.

JWU would continue their good play for the first 9 minutes of the second half, as they twice built leads as large as 16 points, the final one coming as Mario Irby grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back with 11:15 left to put the Wildcats up 60-44. Barber-Scotia would cut the JWU lead to 4 points at 60-56 following two Lee Sweeney baskets. The Wildcats answered with a quick 5-0 run of their own to go back up by 9. Tempers started to flare shortly after Barber-Scotia's LaKeith Scott was whistled for a personal foul and technical foul. Taylor Thomas converted each of the resulting four free throws and Nick Crawford added a jumper to put the Wildcats back up by twelve at 72-60 with 5:16 left. The Sabers responded with a 12-0 run spanning the next 3:23 to tie the score. Barber-Scotia took their first lead of the game, 74-73 with 22 seconds left on a Darnell Ruston basket. JWU would be unable to score again, and  2 technical fouls issued to the Wildcats sent the Sabers to the line for free throws that would provide the final margin of victory, 78-73.

Keller led JWU in scoring with 17 points, while Daniel added 13 more. Mario Irby scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are back in action at home on Tuesday night as they host the Bruins of Piedmont International at 7:30pm.
