Box Score Jamestown, NC – The Lady Wildcats (2-3) traveled to Jamestown this evening to play the Guilford Technical Community College Titans in their first ever meeting between the two schools. Unfortunately, GTCC outplayed JWU, taking the match 3 games to 2.
Moriah Hughes led JWU to an early 2-0 lead in game one with consecutive kills. GTCC swiftly answered with a 4-1 run, to take the lead at 4-3. The Lady Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. That run was capped off by back to back aces by Hughes. The game remained tight through much of the middle and late portions. The Lady Titans broke a 21 all tie with two quick points and went on to win 25-22.
Game two opened with long rallies on both sides of the net which resulted in an 8-5 GTCC lead. The Lady Wildcats then went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the game. GTCC answered with a 6-0 run of their own, taking a 5 point lead at 14-9. The Lady Titans would maintain a comfortable lead for much of the rest of the game, increasing it to as much as 8, at 21-13. Back to back kills by Reanna Bray allowed the Lady Wildcats to close to within 2 at 23-21, however the Titans continued to find open spots in the JWU defense, closing game two 25-21.
JWU started strong in game three, taking a 7-1 lead. The Lady Wildcats were able to maintain their lead for most of the game, but the Titans slowly started clawing their way back into the game, eventually tying it at 17. JWU maintained their aggressiveness and re-took the lead, ultimately taking the game 25-22.
The Titans took an early 7-4 lead in game four. Behind the strong serving of Stephanie Harris, the Lady Wildcats went on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 10-7. Both teams played great defense for much of the rest of the match, resulting in four instances of the score being tied. After a final tie at 23, JWU fought to earn the last two points of the game, taking it 25-23.
Tied up at two games apiece, the final game was a back and forth battle. There were several ties throughout the first half of the game, before GTCC took a 13-10 lead. The Titans were able to maintain a 3 point lead the remainder of the game, winning game five, and the match, by a score of 15-12.
The Lady Wildcats are next in action on Thursday, September 5th when they travel to play the Sandhills Community College Flyers. Match time is set for 6:00pm.
