Thomasville, NC – The Lady Wildcats (5-5) traveled to Thomasville to take on the Davidson County Community College Storm (3-5). JWU continued their recent stretch of strong play, earning their first ever win over NJCAA member Davidson County. The Wildcats won the match in 3 games.
JWU took a 7-2 lead in game one behind the offense of Moriah Hughes and defense of Tori Dublino. DCCC was able to cut the lead by 2, capitalizing on sloppy play by the 'Cats. Great attacking by Reanna Bray helped lead JWU on a 6-1 run, extending their lead to 14-8. The Storm slowly got back into the game, cutting the lead to one at 18-17. Fortunately, the Lady Wildcats responded with a 3-0 run behind great defensive and aggressive play at the net. Solid and well placed serving from DCCC allowed for them to stay in the game, but the 'Cats were able to close out game one, 25-23.
The front line of Hughes, Jazmyne Williams, and Lucy Herrmann sparked a great start for the Wildcats into game two, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead. JWU remained aggressive and was able to maintain a comfortable lead for most of the rest of the game. The Storm pulled together late in the game, going on a 9-2 run to take the lead at 24-22. JWU stemmed the Lady Storm charge, finishing game two with a 4-0 run behind serving from Summer Meredith and strong net presence from Williams. The Lady Wildcats took game two 26-24.
The Lady Wildcats were able to pull ahead, 12-3, early in game three behind strong play from Hughes, Bray, and Madelyn Leonard. JWU continued to dominate at the net, cruising to a 25-9 victory.
JWU is next in action on Wednesday, September 11th hosting the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in their first home match of the season! Match time is set for 7pm and will take place at the JWU Student Center Gymnasium.
