Charlotte, NC- The Johnson & Wales Lady Wildcats (7-5) hosted a CIAA team for the second consecutive night, as the Shaw Lady Bears made their first visit to the Student Center. Thanks to great play in all aspects of the game, they were able to make quick work of the Lady Bears, and extend their winning streak to five.
JWU jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to start game one. Shaw answered with a 5-0 run of their own to briefly take the lead at 6-5. After an exchange of points, the Lady Wildcats ripped off a 4-0 run, keyed by a big block from Madelyn Leonard and Reanna Bray. JWU would pull away from that point, building their lead gradually to a 25-15 final margin.
Game two started much the same way as game one, as the Lady Wildcats found themselves on the good end of a 6-1 score. JWU quickly extended the lead to 17-10 before Shaw made a late charge to cut the lead to one at 17-16. The Lady Wildcats scored 8 of the final 10 points of the game to thwart the Lady Bear rally, taking game two 25-18.
Shaw scored the first point of game three before the Lady Wildcats took control, running off 9 of the next 12 points. JWU was able to maintain the lead through the middle portion of game three despite Shaw's attempts to pull closer. A Moriah Hughes kill gave JWU a 15-12 lead that they eventually turned into a 25-18 game three win.
The Lady Wildcats were led offensively by Summer Meredith and Kylie Meredith, who had 2 service aces each, and Moriah Hughes and Jazmyne Williams, who had 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Defensively, Meredith recorded 9 digs, while Madelyn Leonard added 3 blocks.
Following the brief two game homestand, JWU hits the road for a game at Piedmont Interntional University on Tuesday, September 17th. Match time is 7:00pm.
