JWU Volleyball Tops Johnson C. Smith, Extends Winning Streak to Seven

Box Score

Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales volleyball team made it seven wins in a row on Tuesday, topping NCAA D2 foe Johnson C. Smith 25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-13 at the Wildcat Center.

Lucy Herrmann and Cameron Leonhardt were dominant on offense for the Wildcats (9-3), tallying 19 and 13 kills, respectively.  Haily Thrift posted a season high 37 assists while Samantha Johnson led the defensive effort with 17 digs.

"I love playing in the Wildcat Center," said Johnson & Wales head coach Callie Phillips.  "We have the greatest fans, and they really give us an advantage.  I'm so glad that our team gave them something to cheer for tonight.  We played well in lots of areas to pull together a win.  The Johnson C. Smith game is always a big one, and to see my team play on that level was a lot of fun.  This is a special team, and they have so much potential."

With the loss, Johnson C. Smith fell to 0-5 on the season.  It was the second straight victory over an NCAA D2 opponent for Johnson & Wales following Friday's three set sweep over Livingstone College.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Depayne Middleton Doctor, who was one of the victims of the Charleston church shooting this summer.  The game featured two of her children, Kaylin Doctor (Johnson & Wales) and Gracyn Doctor (Johnson C. Smith), competing against each other for the first time at the college level.

The Wildcats resume play on Friday when they host the Johnson & Wales USCAA Tri-Match against Concordia-Alabama and Mid-Atlantic Christian.  The games will begin at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
