Box Score Charlotte, NC - Rickey Porter's layup with 13 seconds left gave 8th ranked Johnson & Wales a thrilling 84-83 win over 9th ranked Warren Wilson Wednesday night. The win snapped a 5 game slide for the Wildcats and moved them to 3-0 against USCAA D-II foes this season.
Porter posted his third 30+ point game of the season, and the Wildcats (6-9) would need every one of his 32 points. Warren Wilson (7-11) knocked down 7 first half three pointers in building a 22-15 lead in the game's first 10 minutes. The Wildcats recovered, however, behind Porter, Joshua Cohen, and Nick Crawford, to take a 43-39 lead at the half.
JWU looked to be headed for an easy victory, as Porter's layup with 6 minutes remaining gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 79-66. However, the Owls had other ideas. They closed the game on a furious 17-3 run to take an 83-82 lead with 20 seconds left. Porter then muscled his way inside for a final basket that proved to be the game winner, as the Owls' last second three pointer was off the mark.
Porter led all scorers with 32 points. Cohen added 15 points, while Mike Cuthbertson chipped in 11 points and 6 rebounds for the victors.
The Wildcats are next in action this weekend as they host Mid-Atlantic Christian (Friday, 7:30pm), and College of Faith (Saturday, 3:00pm) as part of the JWU Invitational.
