Box Score Charlotte, NC - Rickey Porter posted a game high 23 points and 10 rebounds as the USCAA #6 Johnson & Wales men's basketball team outlasted NAIA foe Allen University in the team's regular season finale on Thursday.
The Wildcats (15-12) clinched their second straight winning season and will head to the USCAA National Championships in Uniontown, PA, on a five game winning streak. The win also avenged an 82-80 loss earlier in the season at Allen University.
In a back-and-forth affair that featured 13 ties and 21 lead changes, it was Porter's layup with 12 seconds to go that broke an 80-80 tie and give the Wildcats the lead for good.
Michael Cuthbertson added 14 points for Johnson & Wales while Nicholas Crawford chipped in with 13 points - including three free throws in the final five seconds to ice the game.
Brandon Cole (12 points) and Joshua Cohen (11 points) were the other Wildcats to reach double figures.
DJ Marshall and Arvel Atwater each scored 17 points for Allen.
Johnson & Wales will now head to Uniontown, PA, for the opening round of the USCAA National Championships on March 3. The Wildcats will face off against USCAA #3 Penn State Mont Alto, who defeated Johnson & Wales in last year's national semifinal 59-50. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
