Box Score 4 Berea, KY - The Johnson & Wales women's volleyball team finished 2-2 at the USCAA Battlefield Classic this weekend at Berea College, marking a strong showing against four programs who were all ranked in the top 10 last year in the USCAA.
"This was a great opportunity for us to see how we matched up with some of the top teams in the USCAA," said Johnson & Wales head coach Callie Phillips. "We pushed the defending national runners-up to five sets and defeated two recent national championship qualifiers. We competed and played hard and demonstrated real promise for the rest of the season."
The Lady Wildcats (11-5) opened play with a four-set win over #10 Cincinnati Clermont on Friday night, defeating the Cougars 25-13 24-26 25-16 25-18.
Four different players posted double digits in kills for Johnson & Wales, led by Lucy Herrmann with 15. Johmillet Berrios added 14 while Toniya Scott and Tiy Gonzalez each had 10.
Donna Harris posted a career high 49 assists while Halle Franklin chipped in with 22 digs.
The next morning, Johnson & Wales opened with a five-set loss to #9 Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, losing 25-21, 24-26, 16-25, 25-23, 6-15.
Herrmann posted another 14 kills and 16 digs while Scott added 10 kills. Harris paced the attack with 34 assists and Franklin added 27 digs.
In the afternoon game, the Lady Wildcats were pitted against defending USCAA National Champions and top-ranked Florida College, falling to the Falcons in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-11.
Herrmann had a team high eight kills while Harris posted a career high 32 digs.
In the finale, Johnson & Wales were able to get the best of the hosts, #6 Berea College, 25-20, 10-25, 23-25, 27-25, 15-8.
Herrmann had a game high 17 kills to go with 20 digs. Harris posted 27 assists while Franklin had 28 digs.
The Lady Wildcats will resume play on Tuesday when they travel to Columbia, SC, to play NAIA side Morris College. Play is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
