Box Score Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales volleyball team produced yet another win in a five-set thriller - this time in their season home opener - as they came from behind to defeat local rival Johnson C. Smith 25-17, 14-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-8 at the Wildcat Center on Thursday.
For the Lady Wildcats (8-1), it was the fourth straight match that has gone to five sets, a trend that has not been lost on head coach Callie Phillips.
"I absolutely love this team, but I think they may be the death of me," said Phillips. "We have played in four straight five-setters. Seriously though, this team will not quit, and I can't be more proud of them. We will continue to improve our consistency and tighten up our play as we move into the middle part of our season."
Phillips, however, will not argue with the results. The Lady Wildcats have continued to build upon their torrid start to the season - one unlike any other start in program history. Only the 2012 and 2015 teams have had nearly as much success, with both claiming 6-3 records in their first nine matches.
The 2012 team went on to reach the quarterfinal round of the USCAA National Championship.
Reigning USCAA National Player of the Week Lucy Herrmann was once again dominant for Johnson & Wales, leading the team in kills (13) and digs (24). Johmillet Berrios posted 12 kills and 12 digs while Toniya Scott added 10 kills for the hosts.
Donna Harris paced the attack with 35 assists. Defensively, Halle Franklin posted 22 digs while Keri Ketchie had 12 digs.
The Lady Wildcats will resume play on Tuesday when they host Shaw University at the Wildcat Center. Play is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
