Wildcats Defense Comes Up Big in 71-70 Win at St. Andrews

Box Score

Laurinburg, N.C. - The USCAA #18 Johnson & Wales men's basketball team held NAIA foe St. Andrews to just a single point in the final six minutes as the Wildcats came from behind to win 71-70 on the road Monday.

Johnson & Wales (6-13) has now won back-to-back games on the road after starting the season 0-8 away from the Wildcat Center.

Malik Bullock scored 16 points in just his third start of the season to lead the Wildcats while fellow sophomore Chris Greer added 14 points, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Kajuan Madden-McAfee (13 points) and Robert Hobson (10 points) also reached double figures for Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats were seemingly in control early in the second half, as a three-pointer by Hobson at the 16:26 mark gave the team a 55-39 lead.  The Knights stormed back with a 23-5 run over the next eight minutes to take the lead, and eventually would stretch the lead to 70-63 on a Jeremias Easterling free throw with 4:49 to go.

Baskets by Bullock and Christian Creswell shortly thereafter cut the lead to three, and two more free throws by Bullock brought Johnson & Wales to within one.

With 1:29 remaining, Hobson scored to reclaim the lead at 71-70, setting up a tense finish that saw neither team score the rest of the way.

Christian Lathan came off the bench for St. Andrews to lead all scorers with 17 points.

The Wildcats will resume play on Wednesday when they host USCAA #7 Warren Wilson College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Wildcat Center.
