Men's Basketball Dethrones Royals

Box Score

Virginia Beach, VA - Johnson & Wales defeated Regent University 75-66 on Wednesday night. The win was the eighth road win of the season for the top ranked Wildcats, which ties the school record set last season.

JWU (18-3, 4-0 EMAC) jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the game's first 10 minutes, and built as much as a sixteen point first half advantage. The Wildcats were paced by DeAndre Williams's 9 points, and 4 rebounds, while Antonio Smith grabbed 12 boards in the period. The Royals (2-12) closed the half on a 13-6 run that saw them head to the locker room down only ten.

Regent continued their strong play to start the second half, briefly taking the lead five minutes in on a Vincent Reed-Berry three pointer. The Wildcats got a layup from Williams immediately afterward to regain a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the game. JWU knocked down 7 of 8 free throw attempts in the final three minutes to thwart any Royal comeback attempt.

Williams and Majerle Poole led the team in scoring with 12 points each. Williams collected 5 rebounds, while Poole had 9. Antonio Smith recorded his third career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. The 14 rebounds are a career high for Smith.

The Wildcats return home on Saturday to face EMAC foe Mid-Atlantic Christian on Homecoming Weekend. Tip time is 1:00pm.
