Box Score Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales volleyball team picked up their tenth win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Allen University on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats started quickly, sprinting out to a 10-4 lead in the first set. Allen responded in the middle portion of the set, closing to within 2 points at 16-14 behind the all-around play of Johnquanek Spencer, who led the Yellow Jackets with 10 kills and 17 digs in the match. JWU (10-8) closed the set on a 9-3 run, capped off by an Allen service error on set point.
Lynasia Felder's back-to-back service aces helped JWU again get off to a quick start in set 2, as they led 7-2 early. Allen (3-9) would get no closer throughout the rest of a set that was punctuated by Kenner Pedigo's sixth kill of the season on the period's penultimate point, as the Wildcats won 25-19.
Allen won the first two points of set 3 to take their first lead of the match. Allen continued to lead throughout the early part of the third before Taylor Walker's seven point service rotation saw JWU go from 7-5 down to 11-8 in front. The Wildcats won the next 5 points to extend their lead to 16-8 before Allen rallied. A 13-5 spurt for the Yellow Jackets saw them tie the set at 21, and then, following a JWU timeout, briefly took a 22-21 lead. Facing set point against them, JWU got kills from Logan Smith and Emily Arends to go with an Allen reception error to claim set 3, 27-25.
Arends led JWU on the afternoon with 12 kills and 17 digs. Demya Scott tallied 8 kills and 18 digs, while Isabelle Lemaster added 9 kills. Logan Smith and Niecee Perofeta combined for 32 assists, while Lynasia Felder had 27 digs. Taylor Walker had a fine all-around game with 5 kills, 4 service aces, and 5 digs.
The Wildcats are next in action on Tuesday, 10/12 as they travel to Bob Jones University for a 7pm match.
