Pineville, NC - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte women's soccer team fell 2-1 to William Peace in their season opener Sunday afternoon.
A steamy afternoon greeted the two teams on the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex turf. The Pacers struck first approximately 20 minutes into the first half when Emma Avery collected the ball 20 yards in front of the Wildcat goal and sent it into the back of the net. JWU answered a little more than ten minutes later when
Azalianna Absalom centered a ball to
Katie Douglas, who beat Pacer netminder Mackenzie Kirk to get JWU on the board.
The game settled in at that point, with neither team able to generate many scoring threats. Finally in the 71st minute, Peace's Lily Rust found herself free in front of the Wildcat net and pushed the ball home for the eventual game winner.
Douglas and
Taylor Witherspoon led the Wildcats with 2 shots each.
Zoe Balmer and
Makenzie Stocum recorded 2 saves each.
The Wildcats are next in action on Saturday, September 9th when they travel to Trinity Baptist College for an 11am kickoff.
