Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales Charlotte knocked off Methodist in a Wednesday matinee following the postponement of the originally scheduled contest on Tuesday.
Methodist led the entirety of the first quarter as the Wildcats were slow to get started. JWU shot just 5 of 15 from the field and committed 7 turnovers in the period. A steal by
Korletta Daniels and subsequent fast break layup from
Jordan Durant gave JWU its first lead of the contest with 7:22 to play in the half. Daniels later converted a conventional three point play to push the Wildcat lead to 8, its biggest of the half, but the Monarchs closed the half on an 11-4 run that found them down a single point at the break, 30-29.
Methodist was again the aggressor out of the locker room, as they turned that halftime deficit into a six point advantage over the first five minutes of the third quarter. JWU answered with a 9-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to grab a three point advantage, and again led by one, 44-43 at the end of the third stanza.Â
The fourth quarter proved to be decisive, as the Wildcats held the Monarchs scoreless over a seven minute stretch in the period that saw JWU increase their lead to a game high fifteen points at 62-47 when Durant hit a corner three pointer with 70 seconds to play. JWU would go on to win 63-49.
Daniels came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points and grab 5 rebounds. Durant added 18 points and 7 boards.
Samara Britt and
Gabby Tapley combined for 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Wildcats next travel to Newport News, Va. to participate in the Apprentice MLK Classic. Their first game of the weekend is Friday, January 12th when they take on Apprentice at 3:00pm.
