Corapolis, PA - 5th seeded Johnson & Wales Charlotte defeated 4th seeded Penn State-Lehigh Valley 2-1 in double overtime on Friday afternoon in pool play at the USCAA National Championships.
The Wildcats scored what is believed to be the quickest goal in national championships history as
Yomar Peguero's header deflected off of a Lion defender and past keeper Jonathan Smith in the game's first thirty seconds. It was one of ten Wildcat shots in the first half to just one for PS-LV. JWU would end the game with a 29-5 advantage in shots.
It looked like that early goal would be enough before the Lions' Jerod Younes split the JWU defense and scored the game tying goal in the seventy-eighth minute to eventually send the game to extra time.
After a scoreless first ten minutes of overtime,
Carter Bonini took a free kick from just inside the left corner of the PS-LV end and curved it into the back of the net for the game winner.
Bonini and Peguero combined for 10 shots, 6 of which were on frame.
Colin Starr made two saves.Â
The WIldcats now await the outcome of Saturday's match between Penn State-Lehigh Valley and Central Maine Community College to determine if they will advance to Sunday's national championship game for a third straight year and fifth time in six seasons.
