Four Score In Double Figures As Wildcats Fend Off Koalas

Columbia, SC - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte women's basketball team defeated Columbia (SC) College 83-72 on Monday evening.

JWU (18-4) forged a four point lead with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter, the largest lead that either team would enjoy in the first half, and led by two after ten minutes 19-17. The second quarter saw the lead change hands seven times as each team made three 3 pointers and went 3-4 at the free throw line. Korletta Daniels scored twelve of her career-high 21 points in the period to keep the Wildcats within two at the midway break.

JWU blitzed the Koalas (10-15) to start the second half. Daniels and McKenzie Taylor hit three pointers on the first two Wildcat possessions. Those were followed by back-to-back conventional three point plays from Taylor and Aimee Evans as part of a 14-0 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter that put JWU up 51-39. Columbia trimmed the lead to six late in the stanza, but Gabby Tapley's jumper with just under a minute left restored a 62-52 advantage with ten minutes to play. The Koalas never got within eight points of the lead in the fourth, as the Wildcats shot 10-16 from the field in the final ten minutes, led by Tapley's 10 points.

Daniels's 21 points were bolstered by 16 from Taylor, and 13 points and 10 rebounds from Tapley. Jamyah Blakeney came off the bench to score 11 points, grab 6 rebounds, and hand out 5 assists.

JWU next travels to Augusta, GA on Saturday, February 17th when they take on Paine College at 2:00pm.
