Petersburg, VA - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte women's basketball team came up short in their quest for a second national championship on Wednesday night, falling 76-65 to Christendom.
Jamyah Blakeney got off to a hot start for the Wildcats, scoring seven first quarter points to keep JWU within four of the Crusaders, who made three 3 pointers in the first ten minutes. Christendom duplicated that feat in the second period as they built a 36-28 halftime advantage on the strength of 50% shooting, and were plus eight on the boards in the first half.
Jayla Lovett scored 9 points in the third quarter, but the rest of the Wildcats were just 1 of 10 from the field. Christendom's Katherine Thomas scored 11 of her 19 points in the stanza as the Crusader advantage ballooned to 16 points after thirty minutes. JWU refused to go quietly in the fourth, trimming the Christendom lead to as few as nine due in large part to a trio of
Jordan Durant 3 pointers, but could get no closer.
Blakeney scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats, while Lovett had 16 points in her final collegiate game.
Gabby Tapley pulled down 11 rebounds.
Blakeney and Lovett were named to the All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play throughout the tournament.Â
