Charlotte, N.C. - Johnson & Wales Charlotte took two games from Johnson C. Smith in a softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats won by scores of 10-0 and 15-7, both in six innings.
JWU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one.
Kaydence Hassell reached base on an error that allowed Layla Strawn to score, and then was brought home by a
Mai Tellez-Martinez base hit.JWU added two more in the third, three runs in the fourth, and three more in the sixth. Hassell was the star at the plate, as she homered and tripled in her four at-bats. She drove in four runs and scored four more herself. Strawn had three hits and
Seven Hope tallied three RBI. Tellez-Martinez pitched six innings, allowing just six hits while striking out four. The shutout was the first in program history for the Wildcats.
JWU was on the front foot early in the second game as well, plating four first inning runs.
Elizabeth Salazar doubled and
Jaden Hamilton followed with a triple to key the attack in the frame. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the second, only to see Johnson C. Smith tie the score with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The Wildcats' response was immediate, scoring four runs in the third and five in the fourth.
Katie Murphy and
Laila Strawn each had hits in those innings. Hassell also hit her second triple of the day in the third. Tellez-Martinez pitched one inning to pick up her second win of the day, as she and starter
Enijah Gary combined to allow 9 hits, walking 7, and striking out 4.
The Wildcats return home on Friday, March 13th to host Alice Lloyd for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
