Huntersville, N.C. - SUNY Poly defeated Johnson & Wales 7-6 in their weekend series finale on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats broke the seal on scoring as they pushed across a run in the bottom of the third inning as
Sami Nezaj's single scored
Jayden Nezaj from first base. SUNY Poly responded with two runs in the top of the next inning, as Maddox Garvey plated two with a one out single to center field. Each team scored a run in the fifth inning, and Poly added another run in the sixth. They then scratched three times in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to five at 7-2.
Jayden Nezaj singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh, igniting a JWU rally. Four of the next five JWU batters got base hits, and the Wildcats combined those with a fielder's choice and an error to score four runs. JWU loaded the bases with two outs, but could not push across the tying run. JWU got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the eighth, with Poly doing the same in the top of the ninth, but no further runs were scored.Â
Jordan Brown went 3-5 on the afternoon, driving in two and scoring one run. JWU starting pitcher
Joseph Mannix pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run. He walked four and struck out three.
The Wildcats next travel to Morris College on Saturday, February 21st for a doubleheader that begins at 3pm.
