Softball Earns Split At Covenant

Lookout Mountain, Ga. - Johnson & Wales Charlotte split their Friday doubleheader with Covenant College. The Wildcats won the first game 7-5, while dropping the second 6-5.

Covenant scored three runs in the bottom of the first to post an early advantage. JWU answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. The key play in that inning was a two RBI single off the bat of Addison Laney.

Covenant added a run in the bottom of the inning to re-take the lead, but JWU again tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. The Wildcats then took the lead for the first time in the top of the sixth, as Hanna Ciplickas and Kaydence Hassell. The Scots cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Mai Tellez-Martinez's solo homer in the seventh restored the two run advantage.

Tellez-Martinez went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed three earned runs, while walking three and striking out two. Hassell had three hits, including a triple and two doubles.

Covenant again scored three in the bottom of the first before the Wildcats settled in. JWU scored five runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Seven Hope's two run triple highlighted the offensive outburst. It was the Scots turn to answer late in game two, as they pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win it.

Starter Katie Murphy and Enijah Gary combined to pitch 5.1 innings. They allowed 10 hits, 3 earned runs, walked two and struck out two. Hope and Laney each had two hits.

The Wildcats continue their road trip on Sunday, April 12th as they travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on Methodist. First game starts at 1:00pm.
