Box Score Pineville, NC - A late goal spoiled an inspired upset bid by the Johnson & Wales women's soccer team, as USCAA #9 Warren Wilson escaped with a 1-0 victory at the OrthoCarolina SportsPlex in Pineville.
Freshman goalkeeper Kylie Priddy made 12 saves on the day for the Wildcats (2-8), keeping the match scoreless until Melina Lozano's goal in the 75th minute.
"I was proud of the girls," said Johnson & Wales head coach Matt Hisler. "I thought they worked hard. Day one, we talked about adaptability, and they demonstrated that very well tonight."
The Wildcats were arguably the better team in the early stages of the match, with Danielle Doyle unlucky not to convert a pair of chances in the first 20 minutes.
As the half wore on, Warren Wilson began to threaten more and more, forcing Priddy into six first half saves, including a great sprawling effort late in the half to deny Ashley Richter from close range.
The second half became more lopsided in chances, with Warren Wilson claiming a 9-1 advantage in shots. However, Johnson & Wales would hold firm defensively all the way up to Lozano's goal. The Warren Wilson sophomore would finish an incisive pass from India Little-Dula 12 yards out to break the deadlock.
The Wildcats will resume play on Saturday when they travel to Washington, D.C., to play Trinity Washington University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
