Box Score Charlotte, NC - A furious rally by the Johnson & Wales women's basketball team came up just short as the USCAA #20 Wildcats fell 68-58 at home to NCAA Division 1 opponent North Carolina Central University on Monday.
The Wildcats (6-14) were able to climb within five points with 1:55 remaining in the fourth quarter, despite a dreadful start that left them in a 25-5 hole early in the contest.
Johnson & Wales guard Vanderia Shackleford tied for the scoring lead on the night with 19 points while Amber Gladden and Jaquana Pauling added 16 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Wildcats entered the fourth quarter trailing 58-43, but would open the period with a 12-2 run to make the score 60-55. Shackleford and Precillya Dixon would combine for 10 points during that frame to spark the comeback.
North Carolina Central (4-16) would prevail, however, with eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to preserve the lead.
Tisha Dixon led the visitors with 19 points. Dominique Adams and Morgan Jones each chipped in with 10 points.
The Wildcats resume play on Tuesday when they travel to USCAA #13 Warren Wilson College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
