Men's Soccer Celebrates Homecoming with 6-1 Win over #14 Christendom

Box Score

Pineville, N.C. - The USCAA #6 Johnson & Wales men's soccer team claimed a resounding 6-1 Homecoming victory over #14 Christendom College on Friday at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.

Tito Villanueva and Sam Fanning each scored twice for the Wildcats (15-0-2), with both players claiming goals on either side of halftime.

Center backs Gavin Brundidge and JT Fucci also scored for Johnson & Wales, while Pete Day scored the lone goal for Christendom.

"We haven't necessarily been our best recently, and it's good to see some different faces step up for us," said head coach James Drzewiecki.  "Tito is a prime example.  I thought he had an excellent performance today.  Gavin did very well, not just with his goal, but also in his defending.  It's important for us to start rounding into form now, and having these players bring that energy allows other guys to feed off of it and maybe start getting back to form as well."

Brundidge opened the scoring just over six minutes in, heading home a corner from Jason Rosales for his first career goal.

Fanning claimed a header of his own in the 14th minute off a cross from Mo Baskaron, and Fucci redirected a header from Danny Kearney in the 19th minute to stake Johnson & Wales a commanding 3-0 lead.

Villanueva scored in the 31st minute on an individual effort, picking up a pass from Seth Furman at half field before using his pace to get in behind the Christendom defense and finishing far post.

Day answered with a counter of his own just three minutes later off a quick through ball by James Foeckler to make it 4-1 heading into the half.

In the second half, Fanning restored the advantage from the penalty spot after Villanueva was fouled in the 62nd minute, and Villanueva added his second goal in the 68th minute, finishing a long ball from Rosales.

The hosts outshot Christendom 27-4 on the day, including 17-0 in the second half.

Johnson & Wales goalkeeper Kennedy Little was called on to make just one save, improving his record to 5-0-2.

The Wildcats will look to complete an undefeated regular season on Saturday when they host Bob Jones University at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.  Both Little and fellow senior Pablo Morera will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
