Men's Soccer Comes Up Short In USCAA D2 Championship Clash

Box Score

Virginia Beach, VA - For the second consecutive year the Johnson & Wales Charlotte Men's Soccer Team fell in the USCAA D2 National Championship contest as the Wildcats were bested by Berkeley (NY) 3-0.

The Knights' Amadou Sy, the USCAA National Player of the Year, tallied all three goals in the match, with his first coming in the 28th minute on the assist from Ryuji Sugiyama. The first half ended  with Berkeley still holding the 1-0 lead. Early in the second half, a Wildcat error led to Sy's second goal of the evening. JWU attempted to battle back, but the Knights' Marcos Leon found Sy for the hat trick in the 67th minute. The Knights outshot the Wildcats 20-15, but shots on goal was even at eight each. Dario Cruz-Sepulveda had eight saves on the evening for the Knights.

"I'm very proud of every single person in this program. I'm proud of our players and our staff," commented JWU Head Coach Matthew Payne after the loss. "Tonight we were beaten by an excellent team. Period. It doesn't change my opinion of this team or these student athletes. We will all grow from this experience and continue to work for more opportunities to play on this stage, to test ourselves against the best teams in our association."

Shawn Geiger, Brandon Greene, and Weeb Isaac were all selected to the All-Tournament Team for the Wildcats. Johnson & Wales finishes the season with a 12-6-1 record.
