Box Score Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales women's soccer recorded their second tie of the season on Tuesday night as they played a 3-3 double overtime thriller with USC-Spartanburg.
The action started in the game's third minute as Rayna Simmons was fouled in the box by JWU's Eboni Montague. Simmons converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the Lancers a quick 1-0 lead.
USC-S controlled play for the first quarter hour before JWU found their own footing on the attacking end of the field and had several good chances to score. The Wildcats finally paid one off five minutes before halftime when a Breann Evertsen cross found its way onto Lauren Burch's foot and she put it into the back of the net to tie the score.
Five minutes into the second half, Katie Douglas put JWU (3-5-2) ahead for the first time when she rocketed a shot that Lancer keeper Courtney Rogers deflected, but couldn't keep out of the net. JWU's lead lasted ten minutes before Burns Brazzell knotted the score on a breakaway opportunity that beat keeper Leah Bragaw. Daryl Monticello scored off of a double rebound to again put JWU ahead with 17 minutes to play, but Brazzell's second goal brought USC-Lancaster (3-2-1) level in the 80th minute.
The two overtime periods could not produce a winner as the teams settled for the draw. JWU outshot USC-L 28-15 on the evening, including 12 shots on goal. Each team earned 4 corner kicks. Burch and Monticello took 7 shots each, while Douglas, Evertsen, and Trinity Knauf had 4 apiece. Bragaw made 7 saves on the evening.
