Box Score Virginia Beach, VA - The curtain came down on the 2021 Johnson & Wales women's soccer season on Sunday afternoon as they took on PSUAC regular season and tournament champion Penn State-Mont Alto. The Wildcats won 2-0 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score.
JWU (7-8-2) controlled the run of play throughout, peppering the Mont Alto defense with 21 shots, 12 of which were on frame. JWU had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 31st minute when a Mont Alto (13-3-1) foul inside the box gave the Wildcats a penalty kick. Trinity Knauf struck the ball well, but Lion goalkeeper Jesime Freet made a great save to keep the game scoreless. That would change nearly ten minutes later when Maira Teruel continued her late season run of form by finding the back of the net for the first time this season.
JWU solidified the lead twenty minutes into the second half when Asmira Garcia served a free kick deftly into the box, finding Katie Douglas who put the ball past Freet for her 8th goal of the season. The Wildcats held Mont Alto to a single shot in the last twenty five minutes of the contest in support of USCAA 1st Team All-American goalkeeper Leah Bragaw, who registered her first complete game shutout of the season. Daryl Monticello led JWU with 6 shots, 4 of which were on frame, while Brooklyn Cathey fired 3 shots, all of which were on goal.
Johnson & Wales finished second in Pool A, while Mont Alto finished third.
