Box Score Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales Charlotte Men's Soccer evened their record at 2-2 on the season after an overtime triumph against Bluefield College on Saturday.
The Wildcats held the edge in the run of play on the afternoon, outshooting the Rams 14-5, while putting 5 of those shots on frame. JWU was unable to get any of those shots over the goal line in regulation, despite several excellent chances. That changed three minutes into overtime, however. Victor Lucero threaded a perfect through ball to Billy Esparza-Diaz who picked it up as he was streaking towards goal. A couple of dribbles and shot that beat Bluefield (1-2) keeper Jake Mendoza later, JWU had it's first overtime win since a double overtime win at Carolina University on October 1st, 2018.
The goal was Esparza-Diaz's second on the season, as he ties Juan Santana-Urieta for the team lead.
Head Coach Phil Kroft loved the way his team kept fighting, despite not seeing early success. "It's always exciting to get an overtime win, and I believe the boys deserved it. They were up for the challenge today, kept battling, and found a way to get the result."
JWU is next in action on Tuesday, September 7th, as they host William Peace for a 7pm kickoff.
