Box Score Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales Men's Soccer team was looking for their third consecutive win when they took on William Peace at OrthoCarolina Sportsplex on Tuesday night. Despite taking an early lead, the Wildcats were unable to fend off the Pacers, falling 2-1.
Johnson & Wales created several scoring chances in the game's first fifteen minutes before finally converting one six minutes later. A Wildcat free kick and subsequent scrum in front of the Pacer goal after William Peace keeper Tripp Kidd could not cleanly handle the ball saw Victor Lucero pick up the loose ball and put it in the back of the net. The Wildcats (2-3) had a couple of other good chances in the middle part of the period, but failed to extend their advantage.
Peace (1-0) began the second half with a renewed attack, and it paid off for them eight minutes into the half when Donnie Leahy richocheted a shot off of goalkeeper Michael Vasquez that bounced high into the air and across the goal line. Travis Garner-McGraw scored the eventual game winner nine minutes later as he found himself open on the near post following a Pacer counterattack. The Wildcats had two goals disallowed later in the half, and could not come up with an equalizer.
The goal was Lucero's first of the season. Vasquez made 5 saves in net for JWU.
JWU is next in action on Saturday, 9/11 as they travel to Pfeiffer for a 6:00PM match.
