Box Score Virginia Beach, VA - Johnson & Wales Charlotte men's soccer took on 5 seed Five Towns College in their second pool play match at the USCAA National Championships on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats scored twice in the second half to claim a 2-1 win over the Sound, and advance to Monday's national championship game.
JWU largely controlled the run of play in the first half, but couldn't break the ice on the scoresheet. The Wildcats did have the ball in the back of the Five Towns net on one occasion, but the goal was ruled out due to goalkeeper obstruction. The first half stat sheet showed that the match was close; JWU had 4 shots to Five Towns' 3, with two from each side being on target.
Five minutes into the second half, JWU got on the board when Parker Davidson headed home a Billy Esparza-Diaz corner kick. The Wildcat goal instilled a sense of urgency in the Sound, and they answered six minutes later when Hector Ruiz lofted a ball over Mason Graham to draw Five Towns even.
Another half dozen minutes after the leveler, the Wildcats took the lead for good when Diaje' Hart threaded a laser of a thru ball from near midfield to the waiting feet of Lucas Lesh, who slotted it home for the game winner. The JWU defense stiffened over the final twenty-five minutes, limiting Five Towns to just two shots.
Johnson & Wales will now take on 3rd seeded Berkeley College (NJ) on Monday at 4:30pm in the USCAA Division II National Championship game.
