Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales Charlotte rallied from 12 points down with four minutes to play to defeat Carolina University 92-85 in overtime on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats led 20-18 after the first quarter as they shot 50% from the field, keyed by 10 points from
Laken Powe. The Bruins got hot in the second period, outscoring JWU 20-12, aided by three 3 point field goals.
Carolina U. extended their lead to 11 after thirty minutes and were ahead by a dozen with four minutes left in regulation. JWU made four 3 pointers as part of a 15-0 run over the next three minutes and fifty seconds that saw them take a 77-74 lead. The Bruins' Le'Asia Matthews was fouled with under ten seconds to play and made her first free throw and then rebounded her missed second free throw only to be fouled again. This time she made both, forcing five extra minutes.
JWU briefly trailed by three in overtime, but converted 11 of 13 free throw attempts while at the same time holding Carolina to a lone point over the final three minutes of the game.
Jordan Durant led the Wildcats with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Maliah Preston added 17 points and 5 assists, while
Laken Powe scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.Â
The Wildcats next travel to Asheville, NC on Saturday to take on Montreat College at 5:00pm.
