Lynchburg, VA - Randolph College defeated Johnson & Wales Charlotte 93-86 in a battle of Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
Randolph took a 15-8 lead in the game's first five minutes only to see JWU trim the advantage to just one at 20-19 with 9:45 to play in the half. JWU could get no closer as Randolph led by as many as nine twice in the latter portion of the first stanza, and the hosts went to the locker room ahead by three, 40-37.
Randolph opened the second half with a three pointer to double their lead. That lead would grow as large as 14 points mid way through the period. Johnson & Wales played their best basketball of the game over hte next three and a half minute, using an 18-6 spurt to cut the Randolph lead to just two at 68-66. Randolph responded in turn with a 13-2 run that put them ahead for good.
William Givens, Jr. came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points, making 7 of 8 field goals, including 3 of 4 three point attempts.
Malcolm Warthen and
Nantambu Calhoun scored 16 points each.
Jaylen Benson-Hollinhead had 11 points and 8 rebounds, while
Nathan Meshida added 10 points.
