Ferrum, VA - The Johnson & Wales men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Ferrum on Sunday, each coming away with 8-1 victories.
The Wildcat women swept the three doubles matches. Both the #1 doubles pair of
Gabriella Tully and
Payton Abrams and the #2 doubles duo of
Kourtney Newton and
Erin Weidner posted 8-4 wins in their matches. JWU's #3 tandem of
Mandy Marth and
Iyana Barber won 8-1 to complete the sweep.
Tully, Marth, and Barber each cruised to 6-1, 6-1 wins in their singles matchups, while Weidner blanked Ferrum's Emily Walker in the #5 singles match. Abrams also had little trouble with the Panthers' Mary Mason, winning 6-2, 6-2.
The JWU men took two of the three doubles matches, and just missed out on winning the third. The #2 pair of Sam Ciciarello and
John Billinis blanked their opponents, while the #3 duo of
Hugo Cossais and
Fernando Esteban lost only one game en route to victory. The top doubles team of
Jonathan Millwood and
Justin Wagner battled Ferrum's Tripoom Jala and Gabriel Alvarez before falling 8-7.
Both Millwood and Wagner rebounded to win their singles matches. Millwood went to three sets with Jala, ultimately prevailing 10-6 in the third. Billinis similarly went three sets against Alvarez before winning 10-6 in the third. Wagner won 6-3, 6-1 over Kevin Nester. Cossais, Ciciarello, and
Dylan Hight all claimed easy victories in their singles matches.
The WIldcat women take on Meredith on Wednesday, March 20th, while the men will host Pfieffer on Thursday, March 21st.
