Laurinburg, NC - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte men's basketball team picked up their fourth win in their last five games with a 91-83 victory at Saint Andrews on Wednesday night.
The host Knights sprinted out of the blocks taking an 13-0 lead on the back of three consecutive 3 pointers. JWU responded with a 23-5 run to grab a five point lead halfway through the first period sparked by
Cooper Wiley's 7 points. The Wildcats increased their lead to 10 at the half as
Malcolm Warthen scored 13 of his career-high 24 points in the first twenty minutes.
JWU led by twelve on two occasions early in the second half, only to see Saint Andrews claw their way back into the game, eventually re-taking the lead with 8:54 left. The teams traded the lead over the next two minutes before a
Nathan Meshida layup with 6:13 to play put the Wildcats ahead for good. The Knights kept it close until the final two minutes before JWU converted all eight of their free throw attempts down the stretch to pull away.
Warthen's 24 points were coupled with 16 from Wiley off the bench as the Wildcat reserves outscored Saint Andrews' bench 48-7.
JWU returns home on Saturday, February 15th for their final home game of the season. They host Morris College at 3pm.
