Newport News, Va. - Johnson & Wales Charlotte defeated The Apprentice School 66-60 on Friday afternoon. The game's start time was moved up to allow completion of the game prior to the arrival of winter weather in the Carolinas and Virginia.
The Builders built a seven point lead early in the second quarter only to see JWU reel off six unanswered points to trim the lead to just one point at 21-20. Apprentice regained a seven point budge with just under three minutes remaining in the half before the Wildcats rattled off an 11-2 spurt to end the half, keyed by a trio of
Sydney Wells three point baskets.
It was JWU's turn to go ahead by as many as seven in the third quarter, as
Laylah Toscano scored 7 of her game-high 17 points for the Wildcats. The hosts rallied in the fourth quarter, grabbing a one point lead with 4:22 to play. That advantage was short lived, however, as JWU got three pointers from
Korletta Daniels and
Gabby Bryant on consecutive possessions to go back up by four points before eventually winning 66-60.
Toscano added 10 rebounds to go along with her 17 points. Daniels also scored 17 points, while Wells had 12 off the bench. Bryant had a solid all-around game with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The Wildcats' scheduled game on Saturday, January 31st at Regent has been postponed. They will next play on Saturday, February 7th at 1pm when they welcome Regent to the Wildcat Center.
