Baseball Wins Series Finale Against Bluefield State

Charlotte, N.C. - Johnson & Wales Charlotte hosted Bluefield State for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday. Bluefield State won the first two games before the Wildcats prevailed in game three.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings in game one, with the big hit coming off the bat of Dev Hernandez. He hit a bases loaded triple to right centerfield in the bottom of the third. The Big Blues rallied for five runs in the top of the eighth to tie the score at eight, and then scored twice in the top of the ninth to go ahead. JWU got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but could get no closer.

Hernandez went 3-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Julian Hayes pitched six innings, allowing just two earned runs. He walked seven and struck out five.

JWU did all of their scoring in game two in the third inning, as Jordan Brown's RBI single scored Jayden Nezaj. Sami Nezaj scored on a wild pitch and Brown then scored on a passed ball. Bluefield State scored their twelve runs over the final four innings. Carlitos Ramirez had two hits for the Wildcats. McKinley Myles pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five earned runs. He walked one and struck out two.

The Wildcats put together good pitching and good hitting in Saturday's second game. They scored nine runs on nine hits, plating multiple runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. Jordan Brown hit his first home run as a Wildcat, a two run shot in the fourth. Starting pitcher James Long and reliever Hunter Conn-Beck combined to allow just five runs while striking out two and walking one.

JWU is next in action on Tuesday, April 21st when they travel to Danville, Va. to take on Averett. First pitch is set for 3:00pm.
