Box Score 2 Charlotte, NC - No. 7 Johnson & Wales (22-8) got Family Weekend activities off to a roaring start as they hosted Wake Tech (22-14) and Guilford Tech (6-13) in the final home tri-match of the season. The Lady Wildcats extended their school record win streak to ten games as they emerged victorious in both contests.
Following a 4-4 start to game one, Wake Tech reeled off a 7-1 run to take control. The Lady Wildcats could do little to stem the tide as the Lady Eagles grew their lead to as much as ten at 20-10, before eventually winning the game 25-14.
JWU got off to a much better start in game two. They jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and extended it to 15-5 on a Madelyn Leonard kill. The lead would swell to fifteen at 21-6 after back-to-back kills from Jazmyne Williams and Kylie Marquardt. The Lady Wildcats would cruise home from there, taking game two 25-13.
The Lady Wildcats gradually exerted control in game three. They slowly built their lead, first to five points, then to ten, and eventually as much as fourteen at 20-6 on a Lucy Herrmann kill. They would finish off the game ten points late, claiming a 25-11 victory.
Game four was a close affair throughout. Neither team led by more than two until Hughes's kill gave JWU a 12-9 advantage. The Lady Wildcats built their lead to six at 17-11 on a Marquardt ace. They held on from there and closed out the game 25-21, and the match 3-1.
Moriah Hughes led the attack with 10 kills and 19 digs. Kylie Marquardt added 14 assists.
The second match was a revenge game for JWU, as they looked to avenge an early season road defeat at the hands of Guilford Tech. The Lady Wildcats came out with something to prove. A Hughes kill gave JWU a 3-0 lead early in game one. The Lady Titans responded with a 9-2 run to grab a four point lead. The Lady Wildcats answered with a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 11-9. JWU would slowly extend their lead from that point. Another Hughes kill pushed the lead to seven at 18-11. Tori Dublino's ace made it 24-14, and JWU finished the game a point later.
Jazmyne Williams starred in game two. Her kill propelled the Lady Wildcats to a 5-2 advantage early in the game. A second kill doubled up the score at 16-8, and her block pushed the lead to double digits at 19-9. Guilford Tech was pushed to the brink, but reeled off a 7-0 run to make it interesting, but JWU secured the final point of the game, winning 25-20.
Guilford Tech jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead and seemed ready to make it a competitive match. The Lady Wildcats responded with a huge 16-2 run to take a 20-15 lead. They would cruise home from there, winning game three 25-21.
Moriah Hughes recorded 11 kills in the second match, while Stephanie Harris chipped in with 16 assists. Hughes and Summer Meredith each tallied 15 digs, and Madelyn Leonard served up 5 big aces.
The Lady Wildcats wrap up the home schedule Tuesday night as they host Louisburg College. Match time is 7pm with senior night activities to preceed it.
