Box Score Charlotte, NC - No. 7 Johnson & Wales (13-8) was looking for a few things on Thursday night. One, they wanted to complete the season sweep of the Davidson County Community College Storm (6-12). Two, they hoped to push their all time record in the Student Center back over the .500 mark. Finally, they wanted to erase the bad taste of Tuesday night's loss to Catawba Valley CC. They were successful in achieving all three.
The Lady Wildcats got off to a slow start in the match. DCCC jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in game one. The Lady Wildcats were unable to respond to the quick Lady Storm start, and fell even further behind as DCCC built their lead to 18-9. The Lady Storm capitalized on numerous JWU errors on their way to closing out the game 25-14.
The Lady Wildcats were able turn things around in game two. They took an 8-5 lead before DCCC responded with a 6-0 run to take an 11-8 advantage. JWU then rallied with a 12-2 spurt to take control of the game. The Lady Storm would get within 3 at 23-20 before the Lady Wildcats finished off game two, 25-20.
Game three was another tight contest as neither team led by more than two points until JWU was able to forge ahead by four at 16-12. The Lady Wildcats would briefly push the lead to 5 at 18-13 before the Storm answered with three straight points to draw within two at 18-16. JWU scored 5 of the next 7 points to reclaim a five point advantage at 23-18. The game was over four points later, with the Lady Wildcats claiming another 25-20 victory.
Kylie Marquardt made sure that game four was over virtually before it started. She reeled off the first nine points of the game on her serve, including a handful of aces. The Lady Storm was unable to recover as JWU's lead swelled to fifteen points at 18-3. The Lady Wildcats cruised home from there with a 25-7 game four win, and a 3-1 match victory.
JWU was led on the night by Marquardt's 13 assists and 8 aces, which fell one short of a single match school record. Moriah Hughes also had a stellar game with 8 kills, 19 digs, and 4 blocks. Jazmyne Williams was a force at the net with 4 blocks of her own. Madelyn Leonard tied Hughes for the team lead in kills, also recording 8.
