Box Score Charlotte, NC -- It was a tough night for the Wildcats as not much went their way against Davidson County Community College Tuesday night. The first game was a thriller, and the next two sets were competitive, but ultimately DCCC came out on top and took the match 3-0.
The first set saw JWU jump ahead to a 4-0 lead behind aggressive hitting from Kylie Marquardt and Lucy Herrmann. The DCCC defense was quick to adjust, though, and they closed some holes that were open early in the game. The game saw several lead changes before DCCC went on a small run to go up 24-18. The Wildcats came back to force extra play with a 24-24 tie, but neither team could score two points in a row to take control of the match for quite some time. With aggressive net play and smart adjustments, DCCC finally won the first set 33-31.
The second set was closely fought, with both sides holding early leads. DCCC's defense held the Wildcats at bay, and they were able to feed their hitters off of defensive digs. JWU again fought back when the Storm hit 24 points, but it was not enough. DCCC won the second set by a score of 25-22.
Frustration set in once again for the Wildcats in game three when they found themselves in an early hole. Lucy Herrmann gave the team a shot of energy with 6 straight aces to put the Wildcats on top 8-6. The lead changed hands again several times in this game too, but again DCCC reached 25 first, with a final score of 25-19.
The Wildcats were led by Reanna Bray and Kylie Marquardt with 8 kills each. Hailey Thrift had 27 assists, and Samantha Johnson had 21 digs on defense. The Wildcats, as a team, did not miss a serve in the match. They next play at home on September 18 at 6:00 PM when North Greenville University visits the Student Center.
