Box Score 3 Hilton Head, SC - The Johnson & Wales women's tennis team won consecutive matches for the first time in program history as they went 2-1 at this week's Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, SC. The Wildcats were among the more than fifty different schools that gathered in Hilton Head for a week of matches.
JWU fell to Gordon College 6-3 in Tuesday's match. The #3 doubles pair of Hannah Stokes and Erin Weidner teamed to defeat Gordon's Amanda Moraes and Allyson Fournier 8-1. Kourtney Newton rebounded from losing a first set tiebreak to win the final two sets 6-4 and 10-7 to pick up her first collegiate singles win. Weidner continued her strong play so far this season by defeating Gordon's Joey Keltner 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the #6 singles match.
Wednesday saw the Wildcats pick up their first victory of the season with a 5-4 win over Alfred University. Newton teamed with Kendall Conrad in the #2 doubles match to outlast Alfred's Claire Lander and Alexis Giordano 8-6. Stokes and Weidner got the second doubles point via default. Conrad made it two for two on the day as she won a three setter over the Saxons' Anna Gwozdz 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. Weidner and Stokes each claimed their singles matches by default.
The Wildcats kept that momentum rolling on Thursday as they bested Lancaster Bible 5-4. Gabriella Tully partnered with Jacqueline Rodgers to earn the first victory of the season for the #1 doubles pair as they dispatched Sarah Hartmann and Jana Weist 8-2. Weidner and Stokes finished off an undefeated doubles week with an 8-2 triumph in the #3 doubles match. Tully earned her first collegiate singles win as well on the day. She took the first set against LBC's Sarah Steckbeck 6-3, and then won the match when Steckbeck had to retire trailing 1-0 in the second set. Kendall Conrad got a straight sets win over Weist 6-4, 6-3, and Stokes earned the deciding point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Camryn Burkholder.
Friday's scheduled matches against Cornell College were canceled due to weather.
For the week, five of the six Wildcats earned at least one singles victory, and each of the six players won at least one doubles match. JWU improves to 2-4 on the season.
