Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales Charlotte head tennis coach Taylor Lindsay has announced the signing of Iyana Barber as part of the 2023 recruiting class.
Barber played tennis at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA. She was a four year starter for the Indians, helping them to consecutive appearances in the GHSAA playoffs, their first postseason trips in twenty years. She was the #3 singles players and split time between the top two doubles pairs. She won the team's Coaches' Award for the 2022-23 season.
She is the daughter of Iysha and Rene Barber, and plans to major in Media and Communications at Johnson & Wales. She was the MHS Student of the Year for Audio/Video Technology in 2022, in addition to being named MHS Student of the Month in April of 2022. She won the McEachern Booster Club Scholarship, and was also chosen as a 2023 Marietta Daily Journal Scholar Athlete. Barber took some time in deciding to become a Wildcat, but when she did, she was confident that she'd found her home. "As I began my college search, Coach Lindsay was one of my first offers and schools to reach out at the beginning of my senior year while I was still unsure where I was going." She continues, "I felt like I had to live up to the expectation of playing Division 1 sports just like my brother, but when making my final decision, JWU felt close to home while still offering everything I want to do plus more!"
Coach Lindsay similarly felt that Barber was a perfect fit as a Wildcat. "I am excited to have Iyana join our team. She will be a strong asset and will bring a lot of experience to our program. She is a first-class student, athlete, and person. She fits in perfectly with the team and I look forward to working with her throughout the years."
