Box Score 2 Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte men's and women's tennis teams began the Spring portion of their 2023-24 schedule with a home match against Columbia (SC) College on Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcat men battled the Koalas, dropping a close decision, 5-4. JWU won two of the three doubles matches, as
Jonathan Millwood and
Justin Wagner teamed to win the #2 doubles match 8-1, while
Fernando Esteban and
Hugo Cossais duplicated that feat in the #3 doubles match.
Millwood and Cossais each won their singles match via retirement. Wagner fell 7-5, 6-4 to Columbia's Jonah Haller in the #3 singles match, and Ciccirello nearly forced a third set in the #4 singles match, ultimately losing 6-1, 7-5 to Tiaan Jacobs.
Dylan Hight battled Michael Schiesz in the #6 singles match, but lost 6-4, 6-4.
JWU's women dropped the first two doubles tilts, as Columbia's Aniya Sims and Mariane Lima knocked off
Gabriella Tully and
Payton Abrams 8-1, while
Kourtney Newton and
Mandy Marth dropped a 8-0 decision to Helena Jokanovic and Viene Geren.Â
Erin Weidner was the lone Wildcat victor in singles matches that were played, as she defeated Joye Tate 6-0, 6-1.
Iyana Barber won her match in a walkover for the final JWU point.
The Wildcats are back in action at home on Saturday, February 17th when they play host to Brevard at 1pm.
