Box Score Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales women's tennis team earned their first win of the Spring season with a 5-4 triumph over Agnes Scott on Wednesday afternoon.
The first two doubles matches were split with identical 8-6 scores. JWU's
Gabriella Tully and
Payton Abrams took out ASC's Allyson Gibbs and Leilah Lewinson in the #1 match, while the Scotties' Iris Ray and Toral Castillo defeated
Kourtney Newton and
Mandy Marth in the #2 tilt. The Wildcats picked up the win in the final doubles match as
Iyana Barber and
Erin Weidner won in a tiebreak, 8-7 (7-5).
Tully was dominant in the #1 singles match, blanking Lewinson 6-0, 6-0. Weidner won the #6 singles match 6-3, 6-2 to knot the match score at 4. Singles match #2 proved to be the deciding point. Newton won the first set over Castillo 6-2, only to see her opponent take the second set 7-5. Newton took charge late in the third set tiebreaker, winning 6 of the final 10 points to take the match.
The Wildcats are next in action at the PTR Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, SC next week. Their first opponent will be Saint Vincent on Monday, March 3rd.
