Charlotte, NC -
Alexius Hampton has been promoted to Head Coach of the Johnson & Wales Charlotte women's basketball program.
She spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach for the Wildcats, helping lead the team to 76 wins, and four consecutive USCAA Division II National Championship appearances. The Wildcats finished as national runners-up in 2023 and 2024. Under her tutelage, nine Wildcats earned USCAA All-American honors, while five more were selected as USCAA All-Academic Team members.
"I am incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Johnson & Wales University. I want to thank Director of Athletics Trudi Lacey for entrusting me with this role and for her belief in my leadership. I'm also deeply thankful to Coach Jill Dunn for her guidance and the opportunity to work alongside her over the past four years — her mentorship and vision have helped shape the foundation of who I am as a coach. JWU holds a special place in my heart, and I'm excited to lead with purpose, passion, and a deep commitment to empowering young women through the game of basketball. I look forward to continuing the growth of this program and building on the legacy of excellence both on and off the court."
Hampton joined Johnson & Wales University after spending three seasons contributing in multiple roles at Cape Fear Community College. During her time with the Sea Devils, the program achieved a 73-20 (.785) record, secured two Region 10 Championships, made consecutive National Tournament appearances, and reached the program's first-ever Final Four with a third-place finish at the 2019 NJCAA National Tournament. Hampton supported all facets of the team, including scouting, recruiting, travel coordination, and study hall oversight. On the court, she focused primarily on guard skill development, helping the Sea Devils achieve a 10-1 home record during the 2018-2019 season.
She began her collegiate playing career at Saint Anselm College in 2012-13 before a season-ending ACL and meniscus injury. After recovering, she transferred to Cape Fear Community College in 2014, where she helped lead the Sea Devils to a 26-5 season and their first-ever Region 10 Championship appearance. During her time there, she tied the single-game assist record with 12 assists and set the single-season assist record with 183. She completed her playing career at Belmont Abbey College, leading the team in assists during the 2016-17 season and earning Conference Carolinas All-Conference honors.
JWU Charlotte athletic director Trudi Lacey has seen Hampton grow into the role during her time at Johnson & Wales. "Coach Lex is a true role model of hard work and dedication. As an assistant coach, she played a vital role in building the winning tradition of our women's basketball program. I'm excited to watch her lead us forward as we enter the NCAA Division III provisional phase."
Hampton earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management from Belmont Abbey College in 2017 and received her M.S. in Sport Leadership from Johnson & Wales University in 2022. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, she and her fiancé share a daughter.
