Statesboro, GA - The Johnson & Wales men's soccer team picked up its eighth victory of the year, claiming a 3-1 win over Oxford College of Emory University at Mill Creek Regional Park in Statesboro, GA, on Sunday.
Goals from Matthew Barriga, Jonathan Arellano, and Monir Baskaron were enough as the Wildcats (8-1) won their first match since a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at Richard Bland College just one week prior.
Barriga opened the scoring 20 minutes in when he pounced on an errant pass from Oxford goalkeeper Killian Glenn and slid the ball home for the 1-0 advantage.
Coming out of halftime, Oxford would try sending numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Just eight minutes in, however, Wildcats midfielder Sam Fanning was able to pick out Jonathan Arellano on a quick counter attack. Arellano dribbled around Glenn and calmly finished for a 2-0 lead.
Baskaron would make it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 80th minute after striker Jalen Jackson was fouled.
Johnson & Wales goalkeeper John Lowes had his bid for a clean sheet spoiled in the 89th minute, when Norbert Schmeidler's free kick skipped off the wall and eluded Lowes for Oxford's only goal.
Lowes made six saves on the day in the winning effort.
The two teams will play again on Friday as the Wildcats travel to Oxford, GA, for a 4:45 p.m. kickoff.
"It was a solid performance today," said Wildcats head coach James Drzewiecki. "It took us a while to find our legs, but once we did I thought we did well to control the game and dictate the tempo. We look forward to seeing Oxford again on Friday. I'm sure it will be a very good match."
