Oxford, GA - Two goals from Jonathan Arellano - including an olimpico - and a string of key saves down the stretch from goalkeeper John Lowes were enough as the USCAA #19 Johnson & Wales men's soccer team claimed a 2-1 win at Oxford College of Emory University on Friday.
It was the second victory over Oxford for the Wildcats (9-1, 7-1 USCAA) in less than a week.
Arellano opened up the scoring in the 29th minute directly from the corner kick, bending his effort into the far corner past Oxford keeper Tenzin Takhla.
Wayward finishing by the Wildcats kept Oxford in striking distance, and the hosts would equalize just eight minutes after halftime.
A turnover deep in Johnson & Wales territory led to a foul just outside the box by center back Jonathan Fucci. Oxford's Norbert Schmeidler drilled the ensuing free kick into the top left corner to make it 1-1.
As time wound down, the Wildcats would push for the winner, and were rewarded in the 84th minute when Arellano took a pass from Alexis Soriano, dribbled past several defenders, and unleashed a 20 yard effort past Takhla for the lead.
In the final minute of the match, Oxford would manage a flurry of chances, with three corner kicks and two point-blank efforts that were turned away by Lowes.
Lowes finished with four saves on the day.
The Wildcats will return to action on Monday when they host Laurel University at the OrthoCarolina SportsPlex in Pineville. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
