Pineville, NC - The USCAA #19 Johnson & Wales men's soccer team made senior goalkeeper Rocky Ramirez's final home match a memorable one, as the Wildcats claimed a 3-0 victory over Laurel University on Monday at the OrthoCarolina SportsPlex.
Ramirez's four saves - in addition to goals from Monir Baskaron, Jonathan Arellano, and Jalen Jackson - gave the Wildcats (10-1, 8-1 USCAA) their second win in four days and ensured the team would finish the year with a perfect record at home.
"I'm thrilled we were able to get the shut out for Rocky," said Wildcats head coach James Drzewiecki. "He's been top class on and off the field since we started, and he deserves the recognition. You couldn't ask for more from a senior than he's given."
Ramirez was the lone holdover from the days of soccer being a club sport at Johnson & Wales, but has enjoyed a near flawless season since joining the varsity team as a walk-on. He has yet to be scored upon in USCAA play this season and leads all eligible goalkeepers in the country in goals against, goals against average, and save percentage.
The Texas native was tested early on, coming up with a fine save on a deflected shot from midfield early in the first half, but faced little trouble from that point on.
Johnson & Wales would struggle to break down a very defensive minded Laurel side until Jackson was fouled in the penalty area in the 37th minute. Baskaron would convert the ensuing penalty to make it 1-0.
Things got worse for Laurel in the 69th minute when a red card reduced them to 10 men, and Arellano would make them pay just over 13 minutes later when he bent a free kick from the right corner into the far side netting for a 2-0 lead.
Jackson would ice the game with less than five minutes to go, finishing off a through ball from Ariel Morales.
The team will resume play on Friday in its regular season finale, as the Wildcats travel to Allendale, SC, to play USC-Salkehatchie. The match is part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team and will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
