Box Score Salem, VA - Danielle Doyle scored four goals and added an assist as the Johnson & Wales women's soccer team romped to a 6-1 victory Wednesday over Hollins University at Salem High School in Salem, VA.
The freshman midfielder's performance helped the Wildcats (2-5) break a three game skid. Doyle now has a team best seven goals on the year, moving her into the top 15 in scoring nationally for the USCAA.
"I'm proud of the girls," said Johnson & Wales head coach Matt Hisler. "They worked hard and were able to put together some pieces we've been working on. It's good to see them get a reward.
"At no point of the game did (Hollins) give up. They gave everything they had. I thought they presented themselves well on the field. I want to thank their coach and their athletic director for coming up with a field last minute that we could play on with the weather being what it was."
It took nearly 34 minutes for Johnson & Wales to break through the Hollins defense before freshmen Abigail Durisseau and Ayanna Dawson hooked up for the opening score, giving Dawson the first goal of her career.
In the 41st minute, Doyle finished her first goal on another assist from Durisseau for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The second half - especially the last 30 minutes - belonged to Doyle.
A goal in the 66th minute followed by an assist to Sabrina Dulaney in the 76th minute gave the Wildcats a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Hollins would answer back just two minutes later on an unassisted goal by Kally Saffer, but Doyle put an exclamation point on the win with two more strikes in the 86th and 88th minutes to secure the 6-1 final.
Katie Kearns, Christin Abdullah, and Ashley Lunceford each registered assists for Johnson & Wales while goalkeeper Kylie Priddy picked up her second victory of the year with five saves on the night.
The Wildcats will resume play on Saturday when they travel to Lynchburg, VA, to play Randolph College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
