Wildcats Maintain Perfect Start, Win 4-0 at Oxford

Box Score

Oxford, GA - The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team maintained its perfect start to the season, claiming a 4-0 win at Oxford College of Emory University on Sunday.

The Wildcats (5-0) have not allowed a goal in over 616 minutes of play dating back to last year, a program record.  The team has now outscored its opponents this season 22-0.

"That defensive record is something we're taking pride in," said head coach James Drzewiecki.  "We've had good organization from the back, even when we've been forced to rotate the lineup due to injuries.  It's gone about as well as you could hope.  Then, of course, it helps that we're scoring goals on the other end and that helps everyone play a bit more relaxed.  We have some tougher matches coming up, so we need to keep this form going."

Jalen Jackson scored twice on the day for Johnson & Wales, giving him a USCAA-leading eight goals on the year, while midfielders Sam Fanning and Seth Furman also found the back of the net for the Wildcats.

Fanning broke the deadlock just before the halftime whistle on a brilliant individual effort, taking a pass from Danny Kearney and weaving through a crowd of Oxford defenders before finishing for the 1-0 advantage.

In the 49th minute, Jackson got in behind the Oxford defense on a through ball from Furman before getting hauled down in the penalty area.  The junior striker converted the ensuing penalty to make it 2-0.

Furman scored his second goal of the year in the 66th minute, heading home a chip from Fanning, and Jackson would add another for good measure, redirecting a cross from Chance Wiginton in the 62nd minute to increase the lead to four.

Goalkeepers John Lowes and Kennedy Little combined to make one save on the day.

The Wildcats will resume play on Wednesday in their home opener as they host John Wesley University.  The match is part of a double header with the women's program and is scheduled to kickoff at 8:30 p.m. at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex in Pineville, NC.
