Springfield, MA - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte track and field team had it's best ever showing at the USCAA National Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
Alonie Baxter was the top Wildcat female sprinter at the meet. She finished 4th in the 100 meters in a personal best time of 13.65 seconds. She also finished 8th in the 200 meters (29.03 seconds), while
Sarah Milne was one position behind, posting a team of 30.85. Baxter again set a new personal best in the 800 meters, running a 1:09.03 to finish 5th. Milne also set a new low time, finishing 7th in 1:12.97.
Emily Spies ran the 1500 meters in 6:06.27, coming home 6th, and followed that up with a win in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Her time of 13:55.92 was a new personal best and nearly 40 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
The two JWU relay teams each finished runner-up. The 4x100 team of Baxter,
Trinity Graham, Milne and Kailah Surratt ran a 55.41, while the 4x400 team of Spies, Milne,
Yenilitza Roman, and Baxter ran 4:51.55.
Zynah Johnson finished on the podium in the high jump, leaping 1.43 meters. Surratt also finished 3rd in the triple jump, posting a 9.67 meter best jump. Johnson was fourth in that event, with a new personal best jump of 8.75 meters. Milne was the top Wildcat finisher in the long jump, coming home 6th in 4.36 meters.
Bee Singleton placed 8th in the shot put, throwing 8.90 meters.
The women's team scored 65 total points, finishing 6th out of 14 teams. That result was three places better than their 2023 finish.
Dillon Neeley opened the men's portion of the meet with a victory in the 10,000 meters. He stopped the clock in just under 36 minutes, posting a time of 35:59.07.
Stevenson Barnes finished runner-up in the 5000 meters, posting a time of 16:32.36.
Logan Shaffer made it a JWU sweep of the steeplechase events, as he won the men's event in a new personal best of 10:12.92. Barnes (4:21.83/3rd), Shaffer (4:29.47/4th), and Neeley (4:41.19/9th) made it three Wildcats in the top 10 in the 1500 meters.Â
The men's 4x400 meter relay squad (Neeley, Shaffer,
Joe Ramirez, and
Maleik Chalmers) came home 3rd in 3:46.49.
Chalmers was the highest point earner of any Wildcat. He finished 4th in the 100 meters, posting a time of 11.43 seconds. He then improved to a second place finish in the 200 meters, running a 23.15. He capped off his individual races with a win in the 400 meters (51.02). He scored 24.5 total points and earned 1st Team All-American honors.
The men's team scored 75 points to finish 3rd, a four place improvement over 2023.
